A contemporary art project at Tenuta Buonivini, Noto

‘Costellazione d’arte’, is Planeta’s latest contemporary art project: from an idea by Valentina Bruschi, Vito Planeta and Ignazio Mortellaro, an itinerary that unites the beauty of the Sicilian landscape with the creativity of notable national and international artists, forming an immersive experience that champions the interaction of art and nature.

Planeta’s family-operated estate in Buonivini, Noto, now hosts open-air works by Claire Fontaine, Petra Feriancová and Ignazio Mortellaro (the latter currently in the process of installation) that engage harmoniously with their agricultural surroundings and the distinctive white limestone soil of the Val di Noto’s southernmost reaches. These installations offer visitors a unique experience, affirming the symbiotic dialogue between contemporary art and the natural environment. The anthropogenic agricultural landscape becomes the site of an encounter between diverse elements.

Visitors can admire the works of other artists in the cellar and the ancient palmento, including pieces by Emiliano Maggi, Giuseppe Buzzotta and Pietro Ruffo. Some of the latter works were created during the nomadic residency ‘Viaggio in Sicilia’, an initiative that for twenty years has led artists across Planeta’s holdings in various localities and – while circumnavigating almost the entire Sicilian coastline – has continued to inspire new creations attached to this extraordinary experience.

‘Costellazione d’arte’ is an invitation to explore new meanings and connections between human beings and the landscape through sculpture, installations and site-specific interventions, creating a context for dialogue between vinicultural excellence and contemporary art.

Claire Fontaine and Ignazio Mortellaro have themselves loaned works to the project. Ignazio Mortellaro’s piece was produced with the support of Fondazione Merz, Planeta’s cultural partner since 2018, for a performance at Segesta Archaeological Park. The remaining works belong to the company’s collection of contemporary art, resulting from various ‘Planeta Cultura per il territorio’ projects.

This newest artistic itinerary adds to Tenuta Buonivini’s prior initiatives. Its ‘Invisible Cellar’ was created in 2003 to the design of architect Maria Giuseppina Grasso Cannizzo, and its ‘Case Sparse’ (Scattered Houses) were restored by Costanza Algranti in 2008 for the fourth edition of ‘Viaggio in Sicilia’. Over the course of her journey, the designer collected articles found in cellar storerooms, on beaches or in the countryside and transformed them into the furnishings that have come to define the Buonivini estate’s guesthouse.
